From Bauhaus to the New House
As part of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union the country that holds the presidency usually organises a debate forum, the main goal of which is to analyse, discuss and present proposals for European-level architectural policies. In 2021, the Ordem dos Arquitectos/Association of Architects will be organising the European Conference on Architectural Policies (ECAP) on 8 and 9 June 2021 at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
ECAP 2021 will be an opportunity to respond to the challenge laid down by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to build a New European Bauhaus, proposing a dialogue on the current challenges for a post-pandemic future, crossing architecture, the arts, the city and policy-making.
A debate on new forms of habitation under the guiding principle of “sustainability”, one that brings together several generations of architects, artists, cultural agents and academics from various disciplines to contribute to the discussion of the current times.

From Bauhaus to the New House — Post-Covid Landscapes is a play on the title of a book by Tom Wolfe, From Bauhaus to Our House, a satire of the modern design school and culture. It adapts the subject matter to the present day, more than 100 years after the foundation of the German school, with the aim of giving architecture, art, design and culture in general a decisive role in the future of post-pandemic design.
The aim of this conference is to build bridges between science and art, between economics and culture, and between society and architecture. It considers interdisciplinarity and collaborative processes as being central to our times, bringing together contributions from diverse agents and geographic regions in Europe and the whole world.

President of the Portuguese Association of Architects
In 1975 Gonçalo Byrne began his own freelance architectural activity; he founded his studio, Gonçalo Byrne Arquitectos, in 1991.
He has been a member of the Portuguese Board of the UIA and a delegate to the World Assembly and Congress of that organisation.
He has taught at several international universities, including Lausanne, Harvard, Venice, Mendrisio, Leuven, Pamplona, Milan, Kansas State University and others.
He has frequently been a jury member for many design competitions and accolades, such as for the Mies van der Rohe Award 2017 or the Swiss Architectural Award, sponsored by the BSI Architectural Foundation (of which he is a permanent member of the Advisory Board) to name just a few.

Eduardo Souto de Moura was born on 25th July 1952 in Porto, where he studied architecture at the School of Fine Arts, graduating in 1980.
He collaborated in the architectural practices of Noé Dinis (in 1974) and Álvaro Siza (from 1975 to 1979).
He has had his own architectural firm since 1980.
From 1981 to 1991, he was assistant professor at his alma mater and later became a professor at the University of Porto’s Faculty of Architecture.
He has been a visiting professor at the architectural schools of Paris-Belleville, Harvard, Dublin, ETH Zurich, Lausanne, Mendrísio and Mantova.
He has taken part in numerous seminars and given many lectures both in Portugal and abroad.

Rui Leão is the president of CIALP (International Council of Portuguese Speaking Architects) for the three-year period 2019-2022, and also president of Docomomo Macao.
He gained a degree in Architecture at the Porto School of Architecture (1993) and a PhD in Architecture and Urbanism at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (Australia, 2019).
Based in Macao, having lived in the Azores, Lisbon and São Tomé and Príncipe, he is a partner at LBA Architecture and Planning, together with the architect Carlotta Bruni, and has been carrying out design projects for large infrastructure, public buildings and public space for the Macao Government since 1999. His work includes the Nam Van Square, which won with the Arcasia Gold Medal 2005-06, and the Reading Room for the Macau Portuguese School, which received a jury commendation for innovation at the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards in 2012.
He is active in architectural teaching and publishing work related with the fields of heritage and urbanism.

She holds a Postgraduate degree in “Housing design and ways of inhabiting” from the University of Porto’s Faculty of Architecture, where she is currently doing a PhD programme with a thesis on “The formalities of the 'informal': from self-production to self-construction in Maputo’s pericentral neighbourhoods”.
In association with different projects, she has participated in several international seminars and conferences, as well as publishing book chapters and scientific articles in specialised magazines and by specialised publishing companies, mainly on the themes of community technical assistance and basic habitability in the self-built neighborhoods of Maputo.

With vast experience in urban planning and housing policies, in addition to his academic work as a university teacher and investigator, Ricardo Veludo now has on a role in defining and coordinating public policies, namely at Lisbon City Council.
Throughout his career he has studied participation and citizen governance models, with a view to achieving the sustainable development of cities, while strategically linking the disciplines of Engineering and Planning with the Social Sciences.
He holds a degree in Territorial Engineering from the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST).

In 2021 she was the recipient of the European Leadership Award for real estate professionals aged 40 or under by the Urban Land Institute.
She is an urbanist and a philosopher specialising in environmental studies and published her first book in 2016 – Artefacts Naturels, about ecological restoration and ways of “reinhabiting” nature. She teaches Urban Controversies at the Grand École “Sciences Po” Paris and Environmental Philosophy at the Université Paris Est.

His contribution led to the Bauhaus of the Seas manifesto he is currently pursuing as a themed New European Bauhaus (NEB) project.
He is a full professor at the Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon and the President and founder of the Interactive Technologies Institute (ITI), the leading HCI and design research institute in Portugal. A strong advocate of the role of human-centric design in participatory culture and sustainability, his research has influenced how digital technologies can engage and inspire digital citizens to act sustainably and connect to ecosystems and the wider nature.

Fernanda Fragateiro works in the field of three-dimensionality, challenging relationships of tension between architecture and sculpture and promoting connections to the place, as she places the spectator in a performative position. Some of her projects have been collaborations with other visual artists, architects, landscapers and performers.
Her work has been exhibited by a wide range of institutions, both in Portugal and abroad, for example: the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna Contemporanea in Rome; Museu de Arte Miguel Urrutia, Bogotá; CaixaForum, Barcelona; the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Paris; the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts at Harvard University; The Bronx Museum of the Arts in New York; and the MUAC Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo, México; etc.
Her works can be found in several institutional and private collections.

He is a Fellow of Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland, currently serving as President.
